The Components of the Prayer

The components of the prayer are listed as follows and they include the following:

  • The Intention or Neeyyat
  • The Call or Takbeerat-ol-Ehram
  • The Rising or Ghiyam
  • The Recitation or Ghara’at
  • The Bowing or Rokoo’
  • The Rising after bowing or Ghiyam mot’tasel be Rokoo’
  • The Prostration or Sojood
  • The Praise or Tasbeehate-Arba’e
  • The Witnessing or Tashah’hod
  • The Greeting or Salam
  • The Closure or Khatm
  • The Intention or Neeyyat

    Stand toward the gheble and repeat the following:

    "I am performing …(you say the number of rak’ats).. rak’at of …(the prayer you are intending to perform).. prayer (i.e., I will perform 2 rak’at of Morning Prayer)

    "vajeb ghorbatan elal-lah".
    "Necessary for closeness to God".

    The Intention or Neeyyat

    The Call or Takbeerat-ol-Ehram

    Bring your thumbs to your ears, palms facing forward and say:

    " Allaho-Akbar"
    "God is greater"

    The Recitation or Ghara’at

    Stand and Recite the following:

    Surah Fateheh (Hamd):

    "Besmellaher Rahmaner Raheem,
    Alhamdo lellahe rabbel a’lameen,
    Ar-rahmaner raheem,
    Maaleke yoamed-deen,
    Eyya ka na’bodo va eyya ka nasta’een,
    Eh’denas-serat-al-mostagheem,
    Seratal-lazeena an‘amta alayhem
    Ghayr-el-maghzoobe alayhem va-laz-zaal-leen,"

    "In the name of God, most Gracious, Most Merciful,
    Praise be to God, the cherisher and Sustainer of the two worlds,
    Most Gracious, Most Merciful,
    Master of the Day of Religion,
    Thee do we worship, and Thine aid do we seek
    Show us the straight path,
    The path of those upon whom thou hast bestowed Grace,
    Those whose portion is not wrath, and who go not astray."
         The Holy Koran, 1:1-7

    Surah Ekhlas (Towhid):

    "Besmellaher Rahmaner Raheem,
    Ghol hovallaho ahad, Allah-os-samad,
    Lam yaled, va lam yoolad
    Va lam yakon lahoo kofovan ahad."

    "In the name of God , Most Gracious , Most Merciful,
    Say He is the unique and only God, Allah is omnipresent, the eternal and Absolute.
    He begetteth not, nor is he begotten,
    And there is none like unto him."
         The holy Koran, 112:1-5

    The Bowing or Rokoo’

    Bow and place the palm of your hands on your knees
    and repeat the following:

    "Sobhana rabbee-al-azeeme va be hamede,"

    "Pure is my creator, the greatest, and I praise Him."

    The Rising after bowing or Ghiyam mot’tasel be Rokoo’

    Stand and say:

    " Allaho-Akbar"

    "God is greater"

    The Prostration or Sojood

    Prostrate, placing your forehead,
    the palms of your hands, your knees,
    and the tip of your toes on the floor
    and repeat the following:

    "Sobhana rabbee-al-a’la va be hamde,"

    "Pure is my creator, the exalted, and I worship him"

    Sit in the kneeing position and say:

    " Allaho-Akbar"
    "God is greater"

    We always perform the Prostration in pairs (total of two)

    "Sobhana rabbee-al-a’la va be hamde,"

    "Pure is my creator, the exalted, and I worship him"

    Sit in the kneeing position and say:

    " Allaho-Akbar"
    "God is greater"

    The Praise or Tasbeehate-Arba’e

    Stand and repeat the following: Sequence three times

    "Sobhan-allahe,
    Val-hamdo-lellahe,
    Va la elaha ellal-laho,
    Val-laho Akbar."

    "Pure is my God,
    Praise is for him,
    There is no God but he,
    And Allah is greater."

    The Witnessing or Tashah’hod

    In the kneeling position repeat the following:

    "Ashhado an la-elaha ellal-laho vahdahoo la shrika lah,
    Va ashhado anna Mohammadan abdohoo va rassooloh,
    Allahomma sal-le a’la Mohammaden va a’le Mohammad."

    "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah,
    He is the only one and has no partner,
    And I bear witness that Mohammad (peace be upon him) is his servant and his Messenger.
    O God, bestow thy Light upon Mohammad (peace be upon him) and his descendent."

    The Greeting or Salam

    In the kneeling position repeat the following:

    "Assalamo alayka ayyohan nabeeyyo va rahmattollahe va barakatoh,
    Asslamo alayna va ala ebadellahes-saleheen,
    Assalamo alaykom va rahmatollahe va barakato."

    "Greeting to you, O messenger,
    And the blessing and abundance of God to you.
    Greeting to us and the righteous servants of God.
    Greeting to you all and the blessing and abundance of God,"

    The Closure or Khatm

    In the kneeling position repeat the following:

    " Allaho-Akbar" " Allaho-Akbar" " Allaho-Akbar" " Allaho-Akbar"
    "God is greater" "God is greater" "God is greater" "God is greater"
